Guide to Using the PolarWatch Catalog

PolarWatch ERDDAP

ERDDAP is the data server that contains all the data in the PolarWatch catalog. Data can be previewed directly with the PolarWatch ERDDAP.

Using the PolarWatch Data Catalog to Preview and Download Data


The PolarWatch catalog enhances ERDDAP with a search and filter view of the datasets, interactive projected map based previews and a simplified data download interface.

  1. Open a browser and go to the following url:

    You will see summary entries for the datasets. Dataset composites from ERDDAP have been grouped to make the catalog less overwhelming. Key information about the dataset is front and center. You can filter the cards using the fields on the left.

  2. Click on the Ice category from the list on the left

    You should see that only one card is now displayed.

  3. Click on the OSI-SAF Sea Ice Concentration Card

    You should see another summary page for the dataset.

  4. Click on the Preview button

    You will see a map of sea ice concentration for the antarctic.

  5. Go to the following url to view a preview map of Arctic Sea Ice|||0|1|

  6. Zoom in twice to select the area we will download for this tutorial.

  7. Click the refine and download button to go to the download form.

    The form is pre-filled with the details from your map view. The latitude, longitude, time and parameter are set to the area displayed on the map.

  8. Click the download button to download a netcdf file to your computer.

Now you can view the NetCDF file in panoply or work with it in R, python or your software of choice.
